Coated tools is obtained by coating a thin layer of refractory metal or non-metallic compound with good wear resistance by vapor deposition on a surface of a hard alloy or high speed steel substrate having good strength and toughness, can also be coated in ceramics, diamond and cubic boron nitride super-hard materials. Coating as a chemical barrier and thermal barrier, the composition of the coated tool to reduce the cutter and the workpiece between the proliferation and chemical reactions, thereby reducing the crescent groove wear. Coated tool has the characteristics of high surface hardness, good wear resistance, stable chemical resistance, heat and oxidation resistance, small friction factor and low thermal conductivity. The cutting tool can improve the tool life by 3 to 5 times, increase cutting speed by 20% to 70%, improve the processing accuracy of 0.5 to 1 grade, reduce consumption of cutting tool costs 20% to 50%. The coating tool is mainly divided into chemical vapor deposition (CVD) tool and physical vapor deposition (PVD) tool according to its preparation method.

The super-hard coating materials are composed of nitrides, carbides and elements of the second and third cycles of the periodic table, composition elements of atomic radius is very small, the main characteristic is that the chemical bonds are mainly covalent bonds, less ionic bond components. Diamond, cubic boron nitride, carbon nitride, boron nitride and DLC are the advanced super-hard coating material. The hardness of most superhard coating materials is above 80GPa and has been widely used in tools, moulds and decoration fields. With the emergence of new processing materials and the development of high speed cutting technology, the cutting process demands more stringently on the cutting tools. However, the traditional materials such as hard alloy, high speed steel cutting tools are difficult to meet the application demand. modern technology research and development of super-hard coating Layer materials are being increasingly updated.
