NO.1 Synthetic Diamonds


Synthetic diamonds, lab grown diamond or artificial synthetic diamond, which are laboratory synthetic artifacts, with the same chemical composition and crystal structure, the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds. As early as the 18th century people began to explore the synthetic diamonds, until the 20th century, due to the development of thermodynamics and high temperature and high pressure technology, make the synthetic diamonds be true. By the nineties of the 20th century, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond film was successfully synthesized, polycrystalline diamond film applying to industry. In 2003, the United States Apollo company synthesized the gem-level single crystal and began to be commercial production. In 2017, the University of Augsburg of Germany, after 26 years, 155 karats of CVD single crystal diamond was significant synthesized.


NO.2 The major synthetic technology of synthetic diamond


At present there are two kinds of synthetic technology


1. High Temperature High Pressure, HTHP

The early synthetic diamond methods, temperature and pressure are two key factors in the preparation of crystals. HPHT synthetic diamonds refer to the use of high temperature (above 500℃) ultra-high pressure (above 1.0X10Pa ) equipment, to make synthetic gemstone raw materials into the press machine with high temperature and high pressure conditions, containing metal catalyst, using metamorphic mineralization mode of transformation or melting to make crystal growth come true. Because of the involvement of metal catalysts, there are often metal inclusions inside the diamond.


2. Chemical Vapor Deposition, CVD

The most common method of CVD single crystal diamonds is the microwave plasma method. Under the synthetic conditions of high temperature (about 800 to 1000℃) low pressure (about 0.1 atm). The carbon containing gas, methane (CH4) and hydrogen are pumped through a pipe into the evacuated reaction chamber, and the gas is heated by microwave, a substrate in the tank is heated at the same time. The microwave generates a plasma, which decomposes into a free carbon atom state in the form of a gaseous compound, finally precipitates on the heated substrate in the form of diamonds after diffusion and convection.

With the improvement of CVD synthesis technology, through the adoption of gas raw material (hydrogen, methane), we get the completely transparent and colorless large size diamond single crystal under less than one air pressure, the temperature of 800-1200 ℃ by epitaxial growth way (growth way/as shown in Figure 1), its composition, hardness, density, etc. are basically identical with natural diamond, but the price is much lower than that of natural diamond; different from the method of high temperature and high pressure (HTHP), CVD artificial synthetic technique does not need to use the catalyst, and puts an end to forming metal inclusions, cracks, holes, etc. in the production.

Features: after polishing, the clarity is commonly VVS and above level, color chromaticity of D-J.

6. Do not contain any metal adhesive;

7. Easy to cut and process
