Scientists Use Industrial Synthetic Diamonds to Store Data

A recent article published in Science Advances states that diamonds can be used for long term storage of data. The experimental data shows that a diamond whose length is only half of a grain of rice and the thickness is thinner than a piece of paper, can accommodate the data that is hundred times of a DVD disc. In the future, physicists expect to increase the storage capacity of diamonds million times of DVDs or even more.

Diamond can store data from inside the "heteroatom". Similar to the doping in semiconductor materials, nitrogen atoms in diamond carbon structures form a "hole", scientists believe that can be used to store data.


The research team members are physicists from the City University of New York. The lasers are used on these tiny defects for data storage and reading, it is like a magnetic field, can attract or exclude electrons. Researchers use green lasers to add electrons to these defective spaces, and red lasers to remove electrons. They have successfully used this technique to encode simple grayscale images and store pictures of Albert Einstein and Schrodinger into diamonds.


Jacobs, who are involved in the project, said that although both diamond storage technology and DVD storage technology use light to read data, their working principles are different. DVD storage technology is two dimensional, and diamond storage technology is three dimensional. DVD discs have only one plane, but diamonds are stereoscopic. You can store data at different layers of the structure, just as many DVDs stacked up.


Similarly, this diamond storage technology works differently from magnetic hard disk storage technology. The life of Hard disk is only 5 to 10 years, because each time the hard disk to do read and write operations will make the material degradation. However, the defects inside the diamond will never change, and if you do nothing, your data will be recorded in the diamond until it disappears.

Researchers claim that they use industrial synthetic diamonds at a much lower cost than natural diamonds. Moreover, no matter how many times the data erased will not have any impact on the storage medium.
